hello ...
Many of you have contacted me asking about costuming stuff since I don't make any mention of it on the blog. I try to focus on the dance and the workout rather than costumes but I realize it's a big part of belly dancing especially if you perform.
I am not that much into sewing or making anything for that matter:) I can use a hot glue gun and make some simple adjustment since it's easier and faster and I have no patience or time for these little things. However, many of this blog readers LOVE to make stuff:) so I am introducing a new category to this blog about costuming.
What would I be sharing?
Well mostly where to get the best costumes for a really good price. You don't necessarily need to spend hundreds for a costumes. You can get many costumes for less than $100. So I will show you the best deals online and how to combine different items you will purchase to put together a great costume.
I will also share with you ideas to modify some pieces of clothing and old costumes to make belly dance related items
I will also share the best places online to get great deals on belly dance props
I will also share ideas on how to spice up a look beyond costumes
You are welcome to share your own links in the comment section
so hopefully this section would satisfy your sparkle cravings:)
My costuming style
Every dancer has his/her own style when it comes to costumes. Mine could go from very simple to heavy. I am a Moroccan Berber so I am used to the big heavy Berber jewelry which I use only when I perform Moroccan style dances. Other than that I keep it really simple and try to reflect the style of dancing that I am presenting to the audience: Big skirts and veils when it comes to Turkish dancing, simple veils that blend with the costumes and simple beaded costumes for the Egyptian style ... etc
I seek "originality" when it comes to costumes. This could be part of the costume itself or an added personal touch. I see too many cookie cutter costumes out there in different colors but basically the same costume! I stay away from those costumes as much as I can.
I will be posting some of the costumes I have on the blog and their story. How I made them, what the components are and where to get them if you can get them anywhere.
Costumes are not about the most beautiful or the most expensive. Your dancing could make any costume beautiful. It's about the story behind the costume and what it means to you. Unfortunately the less time we have, the less meaningful those costumes could be since we just purchase them but I try to always have at least one piece (veil, bracelet, neckless, earnings ... etc) whatever it is... mean something and have a story.
have a lovely day and happy dancing:)
