Putting together a green bellydance costume: my newest addition

The red veil could be purchased for $0.99 (if no one bids) from this seller

The skirt is from this seller:

The top/belt is this beautiful green set

http://shop.ebay.com/emma-shoppingworld/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

For the hair I used some butterfly pieces on the front (you can't see very well here)

You could also other hair pieces like these

the jewelery is simple silver jewelery with lots of sparkles. I think the most expensive piece on this costume is the big bracelet that you can't see well in this picture ($100) but it is one of the most beautiful pieces I own and pretty much goes with everything! It's made of several pieces that could be taken apart to make it a small bracelet or a big one. Other than that all the pieces are priced ok, not too cheap but not outrageously expensive.

The flower costume

This is also one of the oldest costumes! I made specifically for a college international show performance. It'd kind of a funny costume but I love it.

The skirt is actually the skirt of a long dress piece that is actually a lingerie dress so it's completely see through. I used a thick piece of fabric to try to sew on the flowers which were simple cheap plastic/fabric flowers. The kind you could get at the dollar store:) I pinned all the flowers on the bra and the piece of fabric that would become the belt but since I always suck as sewing and never finish any sewing projects, the flowers were just pinned when I performed with this dress:)) the hardest part was making sure the pins don't pinch me as I move. I still have this dress and have not wore it since but I still think the idea is great it could have been executed better though.

If I had discovered the hot glue gun back then I would have totally glued on all those flowers and it would have been much easier. In fact I am thinking about redoing the costume that way so may be I could do another post about the new upgraded flower dress:)

You could use any lingerie skirt for this. here is an example:

this is an ebay seller that tend to always have these at a very good price:

One of my oldest belly dance costumes

This is one of the oldest costumes I made. This pictures is VERY VERY OLD:) 12 years ago may be. The top is actually a simple bra. I used a simple gold trim that goes around all to cover all the bra and added some lamp beads, seriously lamp beads I took off an old lamp I had when I was in college! the trim also makes the straps of the bra in the back and around the neck.

The skirt is actually a strapless dress that I still own (it was a gift from an old friend). Strapless dress make great long tight skirts because they are tight on top (the small part of the strapless dress) and flows at the bottom.

The belt is a simple beaded belt I got during my first visit to Hong King and it's actually meant to be a scarf that goes over an evening dress.

The bracelets including the big gold bracelet was a gift from my host family when I was in India.

and voila! that's the costume. those were the simple days but still is one of the best costumes I have. I love when a costume is made up of elements you can't tell what they are and that mean something to me. I dance better in those too, I am much happier in them: I have a scarf that belonged to my grand mother and I absolutely love dancing wearing it!

Bellydance costumes and stuff ....

hello ...

Many of you have contacted me asking about costuming stuff since I don't make any mention of it on the blog. I try to focus on the dance and the workout rather than costumes but I realize it's a big part of belly dancing especially if you perform.

I am not that much into sewing or making anything for that matter:) I can use a hot glue gun and make some simple adjustment since it's easier and faster and I have no patience or time for these little things. However, many of this blog readers LOVE to make stuff:) so I am introducing a new category to this blog about costuming.

What would I be sharing?

Well mostly where to get the best costumes for a really good price. You don't necessarily need to spend hundreds for a costumes. You can get many costumes for less than $100. So I will show you the best deals online and how to combine different items you will purchase to put together a great costume.

I will also share with you ideas to modify some pieces of clothing and old costumes to make belly dance related items

I will also share the best places online to get great deals on belly dance props

I will also share ideas on how to spice up a look beyond costumes

You are welcome to share your own links in the comment section

so hopefully this section would satisfy your sparkle cravings:)

My costuming style

Every dancer has his/her own style when it comes to costumes. Mine could go from very simple to heavy. I am a Moroccan Berber so I am used to the big heavy Berber jewelry which I use only when I perform Moroccan style dances. Other than that I keep it really simple and try to reflect the style of dancing that I am presenting to the audience: Big skirts and veils when it comes to Turkish dancing, simple veils that blend with the costumes and simple beaded costumes for the Egyptian style ... etc

I seek "originality" when it comes to costumes. This could be part of the costume itself or an added personal touch. I see too many cookie cutter costumes out there in different colors but basically the same costume! I stay away from those costumes as much as I can.

I will be posting some of the costumes I have on the blog and their story. How I made them, what the components are and where to get them if you can get them anywhere.

Costumes are not about the most beautiful or the most expensive. Your dancing could make any costume beautiful. It's about the story behind the costume and what it means to you. Unfortunately the less time we have, the less meaningful those costumes could be since we just purchase them but I try to always have at least one piece (veil, bracelet, neckless, earnings ... etc) whatever it is... mean something and have a story.

have a lovely day and happy dancing:)
